Building a drywall partition
A drywall partition is a lightweight galvanised steel frame, faced on both sides with gypsum plasterboard fixed with self-drilling drywall screws. The joints are taped and finished with gypsum jointing compound.
- Mark the wall line and any door openings on the floor, then on the ceiling.
- Stick the seal to the track and fix it to the floor and ceiling, with an anchor every 400mm. Mark the stud positions top and bottom.
- Set each stud at least 15mm into the ceiling track, spaced out and all facing the same way. The maximum stud spacing is 610mm.
- Fix the gypsum board to the first side, working toward the open side of the stud.
- Add insulation to improve sound and fire performance.
- Board the second side for further stability, then finish the joints and screw heads.
- Do not fix boards to the tracks, so the wall can accommodate movement without cracking.
